Week #2 Free Post: Does Learning Require a Personal Relationship?

I watched this TED talk called Every Child Needs a Champion by Rita Pierson.

In the talk, Rita argues that students need to have a personal relationship with a teacher in order to learn. What do you think?  Can you think of an experience where you learned but didn't have a relationship with a teacher/professor?

She also talked about writing +2 instead of -18 on a quiz with a smiley face.  What do you think about that?

Are relationships really that powerful?

  1. I think it is possible to learn without having a personal relationship with a teacher. Otherwise I don't think giant lecture halls would really serve much purpose, and I've been successful in classes before where I had barely ever spoken to my teacher. But I do think it helps keep students interested and motivated to do well when they have a personal relationship with their teacher and when they genuinely like their teacher. I really liked the +2 instead of -18 thing she does, even if it still means you failed I feel like it would keep the student from being discouraged. I thought this was really interesting:)
